The Beaches of Southern California by Dirk Dallas

An iPhoneographic Essay

I have heard it said that people are defined by how they spend their time. Lately, I find myself spending my time exploring and creating. My favorite place to do these two things is at the beaches in Southern California. My wife and I have always loved visiting the beach and it’s only recently that we have seen our daughter develop that same
love affair and connection to this beautiful place, where water meets land.

Ultimately if I’m feeling joy, awe, excitement and wonder I hope others can share in those same feelings.

Whenever we make a trip out here I’m quickly ushered into all the feelings of paradise, where there’s a fresh crisp ocean breeze, rich golden light, warm sand, and the freeing feeling I get when looking out to an endless horizon. These are all reasons why I love to visit this place and why, as soon as I leave, I’m dreaming about my next
visit there. To me this place feels like home.

One thing I have always set out to do with my photography is to share how I see God’s creation and share what I feel from the places I’m visiting. One image may express a warm, inviting and inspiring moment while another image might lead you into more thought provoking moment that makes you wonder, “What is my place is in this world?” and brings you to realize how small we all really are in the grand scheme of things.

My writing skills leave much to be desired so it’s much easier for me to communicate these emotions through photography. It’s my hope that people have some type of positive reaction when they look at my beach images. I want others to feel as if they were there with me experiencing the scene that is before me. Ultimately if I’m feeling joy, awe, excitement and wonder I hope others can share in those same feelings.

Once I share an image on Twitter or Instagram I’m amazed at how quickly I can have some type of shared connection through a moment that I just experienced. This new form of sharing is powerful and highly motivating to me. Just being able to quickly and easily experience these shared connections and moments with friends and people I have never met from all over the world is what inspires me to keep exploring and creating.
