It’s an incredible event – like a pop-up store museum. Sixty galleries from around the world setting up shop – walking around the 50,000 square feet of art is an incredible experience. The MPA is thrilled to part of it.

We’ve spoken with hundreds of patrons, exhibitors and galleries over the last two days and we are continuously proud of the response our exhibit receives. Photography collectors and gallerists are universally impressed with the work – the fact that the images were all created on mobile phones adds to the intrigue but, what speaks to people is the quality of the work. We are truly proud to bring the best of Mobile Photography into the realm of the Fine Art World. Our community rocks!!

Amazing work. We also feature strong entries by MPA regulars Dirk Dallas, Michal Koralewski, and Emily Rose. We welcome MPA Weekly Showcase first-timers Benjamin Madison, Chris Stern and Eelco Roos. This week’s selection features tremendous entries from MPA stalwarts Karen Divine, Robert-Paul Jansen and Souichi Furusho as well as top shelf work from MPA newcomers Andrew Chapman, Andrew Proudlove and the always excellent Bryan Pahia. The entries continue to provoke and force us to stop and look: the sensual and timeless feeling captured by Jeanette Serrat’s Réflectivité caught our eye immediately as did the gripping detail of Michael Hill’s Contemplation. Who wouldn’t look twice at the odd little building and brilliant color captured in Shel Serkin’s 24 Hours Video? The composition of the suitably titled Alienation by Alon Goldsmith is really special. And so many more!

This work is different from what we might typically associate with street photography: it’s painterly, colorful, vibrant. It’s not less or more authentic, just different. And beautiful! “With my street photographs, I’m interested in taking candid pictures in public places and transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Unlike traditional street photography, I’m interested in creating images that will surprise the viewer, primarily through the use of bold color. I’m less concerned about showing what something or someone looks like than I am with showing how I feel about my subjects.”

ABC 7 in San Francisco ran a prime time news piece on the Mobile Photo Awards on April 24th – the following was written by reporter Don Sanchez:

“You could become an award winning photographer with something you carry around every day — your cellphone. A new exhibition of mobile photography award winners has open at ArtHaus Gallery in San Francisco.

It’s a new medium where a photographer can shoot in black and white or color and design textural creations. All of these photos were shot on an iPhone.

“I take over 100 photos a day. I shoot every day,” said Deb Evans Braun of San Francisco.

Braun won the landscape category with a black and white shot taken in Sharp Park.

“I just couldn’t help seeing this tree that just really struck me, that was bent by the wind. And then the cyclist coming though,” said Braun.

Shane Robinson of Maui won in the apps category with a multi-layered photo of a torso and flowers.

“It’s about six different photographs, but there are many layers of the figure and of the flower that are merged down and combined in different ways,” said Robinson.

Braun and Robinson were two of more than 2,200 entrants from 114 countries in the first mobile photography competition. There are photo apps which allow creation of moods, looks.

“It also allows you to switch lenses for different effects with vignetting, blurring, and different things like that,” said Braun.

“For photography, it’s more about composition, energy, flow, movement and the iPhone does a job like any other camera,” said Robinson.

The iPhone can be used for more than making calls. The gallery proves it can also produce works of art. They both have big SLR cameras, but find the iPhone is less intimidating.

“It’s really discreet. People notice me with a big old camera in front of my face. So I’m able to blend in to the background,” said Braun.

That’s how a New York contestant was able to get this photo of singers in the subway. The exhibition will be featured at the San Francisco Fine Arts Fair May 17-20. And it will be up in ArtHaus Gallery through June 30.”

His passion for his craft is infectious – his talent undeniable. We had a wonderful chat about the importance of context, that is, working thematically with one’s images. Isolated pictures can be enticing but a coherent set of images tell a larger story. With this in mind, we offered Travis the opportunity to share his vision with the readers of the MPA Blog. Please enjoy this photo essay from the streets of San Francisco entitled “Where I Dwell.”

“San Francisco is my home. Though I wasn’t born here, I consider myself an honorary native as I’ve been living here now half my life. I came to The City fresh out of high school to be a part of a then thriving skateboarding scene. I’m 33 now. I grew up here, and San Francisco helped raise me.

I’ve truly seen it all in this town, everything from being shot at from pointblank range to witnessing the birth of my two beautiful children. I can’t really see myself living any place else, and I never get bored roaming the streets with a camera. I understand this city and its inhabitants — people from all walks of life, and they understand me. Every now and again I’ll have someone question what I’m doing to which I simply reply, “That’s what I do, I take pictures of people…”

“Where I Dwell” is a collection of candid street scenes, street portraiture and urban environmental scenes snapped on the streets of San Francisco over the last six months, give or take. All images were shot using Hipstamatic’s Blackeys Film and John S. Lens combo. No crops, tilts, or other app wizardry applied.

I acknowledge and agree as follows:

1) All entries to the Mobile Photo Awards/OlloClip contest must be shot on a Mobile phone or an iOS device. Any mobile phone is acceptable. If it makes phone calls and takes pictures that device is eligible. iOS devices such as iPod Touch and iPad are also eligible. Processing of each photo must be done on a mobile device, no desktop computer editing is permitted. You may use any photo editing application of your choosing as long as said application runs directly on your mobile phone or iOS device. All images not shot on a Mobile phone or iOS device will be disqualified. Prize winner may be asked to submit raw images for verification.

2) SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All entries must be received by Saturday May 12, 2012 at 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time.

3) There are no restrictions on submission eligibility with regard to age or residence. Entry is free. Photographers of all ages and countries of residence are welcome to submit images. All entries must be submitted via the UPLOAD module or if you choose to enter your images via your mobile device you must follow the e-mail instructions on the upload page form as found here

4) Entrants are limited to three (3) image submissions. Image submissions uploaded through the desktop module must be UNDER 2MB. Images larger than 2MB will not be considered as entered into the contest. We will accept the first three (3) submissions received from each entrant. Subsequent entries will be discarded. Entry constitutes acceptance of the Terms and Conditions as outlined herein.

5) Prize winner will be notified via email following the judging period.

6) You assert that you have the right or authorization to submit your images to the Mobile Photo Awards and that the images submitted are the entrant’s original work and do not infringe on any copyrights or any other rights of any third parties. You hold the Mobile Photo Awards and OlloClip, its management, judges, subsidiaries, agents, sponsors, vendors, and affiliates harmless from any and all claims of liability resulting from your entry.

7) Entrant retains 100% of the copyright to their images, the Mobile Photo Awards will have no claim to submitted images and will not be able to sell or license said images to anyone at anytime. You hereby grant the Mobile Photo Awards permission to use your images for promotional purposes.

8.) Submission to the Mobile Photo Awards/OlloClip contest does not guarantee receipt of any prize. The Mobile Photo Awards cannot be held responsible or liable for losses or damages resulting from not granting prizes or not exhibiting submitted images.

9) Entry constitutes permission for the Mobile Photo Awards to use winner’s name for future promotional and publicity purposes without additional compensation

10) The winning entry as determined by the jury panel of the Mobile Photo Awards/OlloClip contest (The jury, consists of Daniel Berman (founder of the MPA), and noted mobile photographers Dirk Dallas and Dutch Doscher) will receive one (1) OlloClip shipped at no charge to winning entrant.
