#4Seconds Exhibit Open Call

A lot can happen in four seconds, the jump of a puddle or a wave goodbye.

The Four Seconds Open Call is a celebration of spontaneous beauty captured through the camera. The Mobile Photography Awards (MPAs) in partnership with Obscura Gallery (Melbourne, Australia) are pleased to announce an open call for entries for artists worldwide to submit photographs and images created on mobile devices (phone and tablet) for the Four Seconds Exhibition – a fine art showcase for Mobile Photography and Art.

The exhibit will feature 25 images, as chosen by our jurySubmissions are open to artists worldwide from August 29-September 12, 2013. All chosen images will be exhibited at Obscura Gallery for a five-week run between November 21st through December 28th, 2013.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by Obscura Gallery Director Gil Baker who found that capturing a spontaneous moment on a mobile phone takes about Four Seconds, from pocket to shutter button.

We welcome all genres and styles of mobile photography: from straight photography to the more painterly and illustrative. We want to feature the best images made on mobile devices.

The Four Seconds Exhibition will be held in conjunction with a special set of photography events at Obscura Gallery, including the 2012 MPA Gallery Tour Exhibit and a series of workshops and presentations on the art and practice of mobile photography.

Entry Deadline and Fees

The call for submissions is open for just two weeks – from August 29 through September 12, 2013. Images accepted into the exhibit will be announced the week of September 30th, 2013. Submission fees are in US Currency and are $15 for 1 image, $30 for 3 images, $50 for 6 images. Further information on the entry process and terms of entry are available on our FAQ.

Mobile Photography Awards Launches 2013 Summer Exhibits

TORONTO, CANADA – June 25th. The Mobile Photography Awards launched the first of two 2013 summer exhibits in Canada today at the Holcim Gallery at the Milton Centre for the Arts near Toronto, Ontario. More than 60 images are on display for three weeks through July 13, 2013. The exhibit features beautifully rendered archival prints of each of the 20 MPA category winners and runners-up in sizes ranging from 10×10 to 30×30. In addition, there are images from the top 3 ArtHaus Photo Essay winners, MPA Photographer/Artist of the year Sarah Jarrett, our jury members and several from our Founder’s Choice list. Artists from nearly 15 countries are represented.

“The Mobile Photography Awards were designed to celebrate and focus attention on the explosive growth of mobile phone photography and art,” says Daniel Berman, the founder of the awards. “We all know the majority of photographs these days are taken on smartphones, however, the MPA is really about something else completely. We want to showcase great art – we offer an opportunity for fine artists who happen to use iPhones and Android devices as artistic tools.”

Juried by top photographers, artists, educators, journalists, and leaders in the field, the winning 20 entries, runners-up and founder’s choices, are now part of an international gallery and exhibit tour. The 2013 tour kicked off at the SOHO Gallery for Digital Art in New York City in February and was followed by a three month showcase at San Francisco’s ArtHaus of the top 3 photo essay submissions plus work from MPA Photographer/ Artist of the year Sarah Jarrett. The MPA results site has a complete online gallery of all the artists and images in the show.

Berman continues and suggests that “…the key is that the devices have made this creativity possible – and I don’t just mean apps, or instant sharing. I believe that making images in the palm of your hand, wherever you happen to be, is more than just a shift or an alternative to the way images were processed before but, actually, a completely new mode of creating images.”

The opening reception is Saturday June 29th from 6:00-9:00PM – The Milton Centre for the Arts is at 1010 Main St in Milton, Ontario.
